BIoT (Blockchain Internet of Things) security & Block Chain application in IoT

Summary:

Internet of Things are evolving into a heterogenous distributed system thanks to ever-increasing importance and flexibility of edge IoT system. This gradual move from Cloud based IoT to edge based IoT is enforcing several new security requirements- as edge based IoT is a distributed system of local database and local computation and can’t be effectively managed by a central management system. Therefore there is a growing demand for distributed management for distributed edge database and computation system. Security essentials required for distributed management of a IoT network, can’t be addressed by conventional security measures. This requires Blockchain technology to be adopted to manage distributed IoT system.

One of the principle use case for managing distributed IoT system has to do with prevention of fraud tempering in IoT based regulation system. In a Smart City Situation, Air pollution or water pollution monitoring system must be fraud-prof at several levels and must be handled as a distributed management system.

This course will introduce essential of distributed IoT system and why and how BlockChain are becoming integral part for decentralized IoT system security.

Target Audience:

  • Engineers and Researchers- working in emerging areas of Blockchain and IoT security.

  • Duration:    1 ( 10 hours / day)-Total 10 hours.

    Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge devices, electronics systems and data systems
  • Basic understanding of software and systems
  • Basic understanding of Statistics (in Excel levels)
  • Understanding of Telecommunication Verticals
  • Basic understanding of Edge IoT system

  • Overview:

Estimates for Internet of Things or IoT market value are massive, since by definition the IoT is an integrated and diffused layer of devices, sensors, and computing power that overlays entire consumer, business-to-business, and government industries. The IoT will account for an increasingly huge number of connections: 12 B by 2019 and 100B+ by 2025.

In the consumer space, many products and services have already crossed over into the IoT, including kitchen and home appliances, parking, RFID, lighting and heating products, and a number of applications in Industrial Internet.

The underlying technologies of IoT are nothing new as M2M communication existed since the birth of Internet. However what changed in last couple of years is the emergence of number of inexpensive wireless technologies added by overwhelming adaptation of smart phones and Tablet in every home. Explosive growth of mobile devices led to present demand of IoT.

As Blockchain technology become more understood in recent years and its capability to solve enterprise business use cases become evident, technologist have been exploring Blockchain technology to solve use cases that have been daunting industries for years. Unlike existing technologies, one of the key features of blockchain technology is its unparalleled capability to provide, traceability, accountability and immutable records that can be accessed at any point in time. One application area of interest for blockchain is securing heterogenous networks. This paper explores the security challenges in a heterogonous network of IoT devices and whether blockchain can be a viable solution. Using an experimental approach, we explore the possibility of using blockchain technology to secure IoT devices, validate IoT device transactions, and establish a chain of trust to secure an IoT device mesh network, as well as investigate the plausibility of using immutable transactions for forensic analysis.
